Hon Francis Ecweru, officially handed over the repair works of Karuma Bridge to NEC Construction Works and Engineering Ltd (NECWorks).

On July 5th, 2024, theĀ  Minister of State for Works and Transport, Hon Francis Ecweru, officially handed over the repair works of Karuma Bridge, located on the Kampala-Gulu highway in Kiryandongo District, to a consortium of China Railway 7th Group and NEC Construction Works and Engineering Ltd (NECWorks), a subsidiary of National Enterprise Corporation (NEC).
The Minister explained that the bridge was closed due to safety concerns, as it had developed cracks and was at risk of collapsing. He expressed his gratitude to the President for directing the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development to expedite funding for the bridge’s repairs.
Hon Ecweru urged the public to remain patient as the contractors work to restore the bridge, promising that it would be reopened to traffic in the near future. Additionally, he announced that the government plans to construct a new, iconic bridge at Karuma, with designs and procurement processes already underway.
Eng Brian Buhanda, the General Manager of NEC Works, on behalf of NEC and the contractor, thanked the Government for giving them an opportunity to build capacity.
Eng Buhanda pledged to execute quality works in three months as provided for in the contract.
